5 Simple Things To Do Every Day To Be Happy

In this week’s Success Newsletter, I would like to reveal the 5 simple things you can do every day which will transform your brain and make you happy.

First a quick update:

“You Are Responsible For The Way You Feel – Emotional Responsibility”
Why do you react emotionally to bad behavior? Are you a prisoner to the behavior of other people? Are you a slave to other people, allowing them to determine your feelings, emotions and responses?

“Trump Clinton Debate Body Language Analysis & Photos”
The Presidential debate between Donald Trump & Hilary Clinton was the most-watched debate in the sixty year history of televised presidential debates – more than 80 million people tuned in. What did their body language reveal? Trump fakes his smiles, Clinton widely opens her eyes to convince people! Listen to the interview and watch the slide show with explanatory captions.

Now, let’s talk about the 5 simple things you can do every day which will transform your brain and make you happy.

What does it take to make you happy?

Although, your answer might be unique, it will also be the belief that something external will make you happy!

In other words, we believe that happiness occurs from outside of us; our external world and environment will predict and determine our levels of happiness.

We believe that when we have become something, done something or gotten something, we will be gloriously happy.

And yet, that entrenched programming simply creates the cycle that we will never be happy, because as soon as we achieve ‘this’, we will then have to achieve ‘that’, and thus we become the hamster on the wheel.

Thus, if happiness is on the other side of success, your brain never gets there, it never gets to happiness, because there is always another goal that is ‘supposed to bring happiness.’

The truth is that our happiness begins with our brain, the way we perceive the world to be, the lens through which we view the world. And then, when our brain is in this positive state of happiness we transform to become more successful and live our potential.

“Your brain at positive performs significantly better than at negative, neutral or stressed. Your intelligence rises, your creativity rises, your energy levels rise. In fact, we’ve found that every single business outcome improves. Your brain at positive is 31% more productive than your brain at negative, neutral or stressed. You’re 37% better at sales. Doctors are 19 percent faster, more accurate at coming up with the correct diagnosis when positive instead of negative, neutral or stressed.”
Shawn Achor, happiness researcher, speaker and author of “The Happiness Advantage”

Research reveals that “The Happiness Advantage” results in:

  • Better secure jobs
  • Better keeping jobs
  • Superior productivity
  • More resilient
  • Less burnout
  • Less turnover
  • Greater sales

In fact, when dopamine levels in your brain are high, you feel happy, and, it turns on the learning centers in your brain and adapt better to the world around you.

“If I know everything about your external world, I can only predict 10% of your long-term happiness. 90 percent of your long-term happiness is predicted not by the external world, but by the way your brain processes the world. And if we change it, if we change our formula for happiness and success, we can change the way that we can then affect reality. What we found is that only 25% of job successes are predicted by IQ, 75 percent of job successes are predicted by your optimism levels, your social support and your ability to see stress as a challenge instead of as a threat.”
Shawn Achor, happiness researcher, speaker and author of “The Happiness Advantage”

How do we become more positive in the present?

Here are 5 ways to become more positive in the present as researched and taught by Shawn Achor:

1. Three Acts of Gratitude
I have been teaching my clients the power of a daily gratitude list. However, this approach is even more effective: Spend two minutes a day writing down three new things you are grateful for. Do this for 21 days in a row.
Science behind it
Looking for 3 new things for which you are grateful each day forces you to look deeper into your life for positive things rather than repeating the same list each day and thus “[your] brain starts to retain a pattern of scanning the world not for the negative, but for the positive first.”

2. Journal A Positive Experience
Spend just 2 minutes a day writing about one positive experience you’ve had over the past 24 hours.

Science behind it
“[It] allows your brain to relive it.”

3. Exercise
Do 15 minutes of fun cardio activity. Find a friend to help you commit and stay on course.

Science behind it
“Exercise teaches your brain that your behavior matters.” And Achor says this is the equivalent of taking an anti-depressant for the first six months, but with a 30 percent lower relapse rate over the next two years.

4. Meditate/Breathe Deeply
If have not yet begun meditation, you can spend 2 minutes “watching your breath go in and out” and it will give your brain a new pattern.

Science behind it
“We find that meditation allows your brain to get over the cultural ADHD that we’ve been creating by trying to do multiple tasks at once and allows our brains to focus on the task at hand…[meditation and watching your breath go in and out] raise accuracy rates, improve levels of happiness, and drop stress levels.”)

5. Random Acts of Kindness
As soon as you open your inbox, write a positive email praising or thanking somebody in your support network; do it for a different person each day.

Science Behind it
You become a positive leader, you build strong social connections (drawing people closer to you) and again it reinforces the first step of gratitude – training your brain to look for the positives first. Building healthy relationships also leads to happiness and health.

Of course, as happiness begins in the brain, the responsibility remains with each one of us to retrain our brain and then to use that positive brain state to make a positive contribution to the people around us!
