Charles Manson, Reverend Jim Jones and Joseph Kibweteere are three famous cult leaders. (Kibweteere was the leader of a suicidal cult that splintered from the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda. In March 17, 2000, in a mass murder/suicide, at least 780 people died with some reports placing the final number above 1,000.)

Heaven’s Gate was another cult -an American UFO religion based in San Diego, California, founded and led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. On March 26, 1997, police discovered the bodies of 39 members of the group who had committed suicide.

And in 2011, Mahendra Trivedi, was touted as a healer, with “the ability to change the molecular structure of cancer cells, radioactive water, virus, bacteria, fungus etc” and his promotional material claims “He has had success with advanced cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic headaches and many other health challenges.” Trivedi’s followers and sales affiliates and promotional and marketing materials refer to him as the Second Coming of Christ. Despite unsupported and undocumented claims of the existence of four thousand studies from institutions around the world, Penn State University, the only US institution to research Trivedi’s alleged gift and ability found no substance to his claims. “Mahendra Trivedi was tested extensively at the Penn State University’s Materials Research Laboratory on several occasions from June – September 2009, and we did not observe any changes in materials or their properties as a result of his ‘blessings’” wrote Dr. Tania Slawecki. Now people close to Trivedi claim he is a scam artist, a cult leader and a fraud with some women accusing him of sexual harassment and sexual assault.

And in 2018, Keith Raniere — the co-founder of an allegedly torturous and psychologically manipulative secret society, NXIVM, was arrested.  “Keith Raniere displayed a disgusting abuse of power in his efforts to denigrate and manipulate women he considered his sex slaves,” FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William Sweeney said. According to the FBI, many of the victims had Raniere’s initials “branded in their pubic regions” with a cauterizing pen in a “tribute.”

Of the 55 people who participated in the Sweat Lodge, some were doctors, engineers, salespeople, small-business owners and other professionals who paid $10,000 to break down personal barriers. And to do so, according to CNN and the trial, “they were willing to shave their heads, meditate in the desert for 36 hours without food and water, then symbolically die and be reborn in the sweat lodge ritual.”

Witnesses in the trial speak of some of the participants wanting to please James Ray and feeling intimidated by a man who made all sorts of promises such as “to have one of the most intense altered states you’ve ever had in your entire life.”

Participants engaged in extreme exercises that involved role-playing, sleep deprivation, lectures, journal writing, fasting for 36 hours and extreme physical challenges.

Some commentators such as marketing expert and author, Dave Lakhani, have criticized James Arthur Ray, accusing him of “cult tactics” and accusing the Law of Attraction as being nothing more than a “cult” belief.
