Patching Relationships For The Holidays

The Holidays is supposed to be a special time to get together with the family and loved ones but it can turn out to be the most stressful and painful time of the year with arguments and ill feelings breaking out and ruining the Holidays. Relationships that are already sour can turn truly foul and explosive. So, how do we patch relationships for the Holidays?

“The key is to not make it about you,” says Patrick Wanis, author of “How to Get Over It – breakups, betrayals and rejections.”  Wanis, a Celebrity Life-Coach and Human Behavior and Relationship Expert for Date.com, Matchmaker.com and American Media pocketbooks advises to “Stop taking it personally and stop trying to be right or vindicated in every situation. Being happy is more important than being right. Remember that the Holidays are about celebrating what we are grateful for. It’s a time to reconnect with our family and friends. It’s also key to be vulnerable, admit your errors, let the other person know how important he or she is to you and that you want to rebuild the relationship and trust. Just be prepared that the other person may not respond the exact way you want – but there are specific strategies that will help to get a good response.”

Talking Points: The strategies

  • How to ask for someone’s forgiveness
  • How to forgive the other person (friend, family member, spouse or Ex)
  • How to handle the situation when the other person refuses to forgive but you both still have to be around each other for the sake of mom, dad or the kids
  • How to act on that special day, luncheon or dinner When to begin to take the first steps to patching the relationship
