In psychology there is a relationship dynamic known as the Drama Triangle which consists of the Victim, the Rescuer and the Persecutor – roles which people assume in both professional and personal relationships.
The Victim cries I am hurting and I am helpless and so the Rescuer comes to save the Victim. At times, the Victim or even the Rescuer will shift, become angry and begin to persecute others by criticizing, blaming and condemning others for his/her plight & victimhood.
US Republican Presidential nominee, Donald Trump began his campaign as the Rescuer – the Hero, blatantly citing & exposing the ills & suffering of the nation and clearly stating, “I alone can fix it.”
Trump was also loud and clear in blaming & condemning the many people he holds responsible for the plight of the US, succinctly attempting to unify the people by identifying what he calls various enemies and threats to the US and making it ‘us versus them’.
In turn, the American people responded with a thunderous cry of ‘yes, we are suffering; help us!’
And for many months, it seemed Trump would be the hero and rescuer of the US, blazing the trail to “Make America Great Again.”
However, within the past 30 days, following the Republican convention, Trump has quickly and dramatically transformed from the Hero & Rescuer into the Victim.
Throughout most of his campaigning, Trump constantly gloated of his wealth, power and abilities to rescue: “we’ll have so much winning, you’ll get bored with winning.” He triumphantly roared that he did not need money from anyone else, that he could fund his own campaign and he could do it all on his own.
Accordingly, Trump became the hero to the people who believed they are Victims of a corrupt system that has ignored and tortured them.
Now, though, Trump is crying out like the injured Hero who expects to lose and suffer, wailing that everyone is against him and that he has little chance of winning now:
Like a Victim, Trump states that the system and election is rigged and that he believes the Democrats will cheat. In Ohio, Trump said the election might be “rigged.” In Pennsylvania, he warned that individual Democrats might “vote five times”:
“The only way we can lose, in my opinion – and I really mean this, Pennsylvania – is if cheating goes on. I really believe it.”
Trump also blames the “unfair” and “dishonest media” for his failing numbers in the polls:
“Crooked Hillary Clinton is being protected by the media…If the disgusting and corrupt media covered me honestly and didn’t put false meaning into the words I say, I would be beating Hillary by 20%.”
Why did Trump transform so suddenly from The Rescuer of the American people to The Victim – from the Hero to the Sufferer?
One might argue that Trump believes he is going to lose and is preparing for it by offering all of the reasons that he will lose, blaming everyone else, thereby exposing a conspiracy to bring him down and, thereby avoiding all responsibility for the election outcome.
Finally, the irony is that Trump rose to power by consistently reinforcing to the American people that they are Victims and he is the Hero, the Rescuer, and now, Trump has become the Victim.
Who will now save the American people?
