Now, let’s talk about therapy and what it is really.

What is therapy, really? Or perhaps the we should be addressing the question “What is real therapy?”

The dictionary defines therapy as ‘the treatment of mental or psychological disorders by psychological means.’ However, that gives no indication as to the terms or process of the therapy; will it be rapid or long-term, will it be easy or painful? Will it even work?

Real or effective therapy is a therapy that ultimately helps you to shift in the way that you see the world.

I define emotional wellness as the relationship which you have with yourself and the world around you, and to the extent that you feel in control of that relationship with yourself and the world around you. Again, all of this is simply determined by the way you see the world. For example, do you see the world as a mean, nasty place or a kind, friendly place full of opportunities?

And where do you see your place in the world?

From decades of working with clients all around the world, I discovered that everyone has the same core issue. When you get to the deepest part of every person, you’ll find that the core belief is ‘I’m not good enough’: I’m not worthy, I’m not lovable, there is something wrong with me, I’m an outsider, I don’t belong.

Accordingly, real therapy changes this subconscious belief and, releases all the associated emotions such as guilt, shame, blame, fear, insecurity, confusion, loneliness, sadness, anger, hurt, and so forth.

“The basis for any approach to self-transformation is an ever-increasing awareness of reality and the shedding of illusions.”
– Erich Fromm

Real therapy is about shedding illusions.

It’s true that most of what we believe are actually just illusions. The subconscious beliefs that you have were formed in childhood when you had such limited knowledge and understanding of the world and specifically limited knowledge about the people who formed your world such as your parents and caretakers.

Because children are egocentric, they believe that the universe revolves around them, and therefore they subconsciously believe that anything and everything that happens to them is their fault.

With this belief, they make extraordinarily inaccurate interpretations of everything that happens or doesn’t happen. Even if they don’t get their basic needs met, children will conclude ‘It’s my fault; I’m not good enough otherwise daddy/mommy would love me or not hit me or…’

“To perceive a new aspect of oneself is the first step toward changing the concept of oneself.”
– Carl Rogers

Yes, it’s true that children will blame themselves for all the things that their parents did or didn’t do. This occurs at a subconscious level. Of course, consciously, with insights and wisdom and understanding you recognize that whatever your parents did or didn’t do had nothing to do with you. They are who they are and where that way before you came along. Accordingly, the subconscious beliefs that you and I and everyone else form are simply illusions – highly inaccurate and often destructive or self-defeating interpretations which become lifelong illusions. By transforming the illusions at a subconscious level, and discovering reality or in this case, the truth about why it happened and how it had nothing to do with you, that you are not the cause of your parents actions or lack of actions, you are set free.

Healing is the personal experience of transcendence of suffering.

Thus, real therapy uncovers the root cause of your behavior and emotions. Real therapy uncovers the root cause by identifying the subconscious belief, when and how it originated, and all the emotions attached to that belief. Contrary to what you’ve probably been told or what you even have experienced thus far, it’s not a process that takes decades or weekly sessions for decades. Real therapy gets to the root cause of the issue rapidly, and it helps you to safely, gently and effectively release those painful emotions without reliving them. Real therapy doesn’t talk to your conscious mind, since you already have the conscious knowledge; real therapy connects to and works with your subconscious mind.

“Patients need experiences, not explanations.”
– Frieda Fromm-Reichman

Real therapy helps you to gain a new perspective on what happened, to truly understand the people around you, to understand that we are all humans, we are all imperfect and we all make mistakes. When you can truly understand that you are human and imperfect and so is everyone else, then you can forgive yourself and everyone else for being human. Along with forgiveness comes acceptance, approval, and ultimately compassion and love. Real therapy also makes the distinction between imperfect humans and something bad that was committed. Real therapy focuses on setting you free from all the illusions and all the painful emotions that you’ve been living with and living from for so long. Real therapy helps you to uncover the truth about yourself.

“People need to be connected… when we look at suicide, purpose in life and belonging are part of the solution.”
-Jonathan E. Sherin, MD, PhD, Director of LA County DMH

Real therapy helps to set you free to express your deepest hidden desire – to express love and to reconnect with yourself and reconnect with the world around you.
