Michael Vick is out of prison after serving almost 2 years for illegal gambling, dogfighting and killing dogs. Vick participated in the killings of eight dogs. The animals were killed “by various methods, including hanging, drowning and slamming at least one dog’s body to the ground.”

Why would someone as famous, successful and wealthy as Michael Vick who once ran the 40-yard dash in 4.3 seconds and once signed an NFL contract worth $130 million, commit such cruelty to animals? And is his debt to society been paid; will society forgive him and give him a second chance? Can Michael Vick ever be truly rehabilitated?

Russ Morley, host of the morning show on News/Talk 850 WFTL interviews Human Behavior Expert Patrick Wanis, PhD for insights into the motivations behind Michael Vick’s cruelty and his claim that he never knew that dogfighting is cruel. Patrick Wanis reveals various possible contributing factors that lead to Michael Vick’s behavior, referencing possible suppressed rage over his childhood. Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, says about Michael Vick and the possibility of Vick becoming involved in programs designed to eradicate dogfighting: “I sat with the man, but I still don’t know what’s in his heart. He told me he did terrible things to dogs. He said he grew up with dogfighting as a boy, and that he never sufficiently questioned it as he grew into manhood. He said this experience has been a trauma and he’s changed forever. And he said he wants to show the American public that he is committed to helping combat this problem. He asked for an opportunity to help. I want to give him that opportunity. If he makes the most of it, and demonstrates a sincere, long-term commitment to the task, then it may prove to be a tipping point in our campaign to eradicate dogfighting. If he demonstrates a fleeting or superficial interest, then it will be his own failing, not ours. He needs to prove himself to us and the rest of the country. We’re just giving him better platforms to prove himself. We’re about the business of change. Michael has a real opportunity here.”” Patrick Wanis says that Michael Vick may never be completely rehabilitated in the full sense of the word. Why not?
