Michael Vick is out of prison after serving almost 2 years for illegal gambling, dogfighting and killing dogs. Vick participated in the killings of eight dogs. The animals were killed “by various methods, including hanging, drowning and slamming at least one dog’s body to the ground.”
Why would someone as famous, successful and wealthy as Michael Vick who once ran the 40-yard dash in 4.3 seconds and once signed an NFL contract worth $130 million, commit such cruelty to animals? And is his debt to society been paid; will society forgive him and give him a second chance? Can Michael Vick ever be truly rehabilitated?

He asked for an opportunity to help. I want to give him that opportunity. If he makes the most of it, and demonstrates a sincere, long-term commitment to the task, then it may prove to be a tipping point in our campaign to eradicate dogfighting. If he demonstrates a fleeting or superficial interest, then it will be his own failing, not ours. He needs to prove himself to us and the rest of the country. We’re just giving him better platforms to prove himself. We’re about the business of change.
