Now, let’s talk about winning or losing and the link between the Big Five Personality Traits and winning.

What percentage of life’s outcomes is chance?

What percentage of life’s outcomes is choice?

Are we all simply minions with no ability to determine our destiny or outcome?

The way you respond to these questions alone is not just a reflection of your present outcomes in life; it is a reflection of your personality which also determines and has determined your outcomes in life!

Simply put: you have much greater control over your life and your results than you possibly realize – or maybe you do realize!

For example, The Marshmallow study revealed that the ability to say “No”, to harness self-control or to delay gratification is directly linked to future success – in all areas – behavior, friendships, relationships, stress, BMI and career. Read more

“You must make a decision that you are going to move on. It won’t happen automatically. You will have to rise up and say, ‘I don’t care how hard this is, I don’t care how disappointed I am, I’m not going to let this get the best of me. I’m moving on with my life.”  ― Joel OsteenYour Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential

The same principle (you have control over your outcomes and success in life) applies and is determined by not just your attitude but rather by your personality!

There are five basic dimensions of personality, often referred to as the Big 5 personality traits or OCEAN – openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism.

Openness: open to emotional and intellectual experiences, imaginative, creative (not necessarily artistic), insightful, emotionally aware. Low levels of openness equals being close-minded and inflexible.

Conscientiousness: thoughtful, thorough, careful, vigilant, efficient, organized, responsible, strong impulse control, and goal-directed behaviors. Low levels of conscientiousness equals being irresponsible, rash, impulsive, and distractable.

Extroversion: Enthusiastic, action-oriented, excitable, sociable, talkative, assertive, energetic, emotionally expressive. Low levels of extroversion equals being detached, cold, socially withdrawn, and unable to experience pleasure.

Agreeableness: considerate, kind, generous, trusting, trustworthy, helpful, flexible, optimistic, altruistic, affectionate. Low levels of agreeableness equals being deceitful, manipulative, suspicious, callous, hostile, and grandiose.

Neuroticism: emotional instability, emotionally reactive, negative emotions – anger, anxiety, or depression, moodiness, irritability, and sadness. Low levels of neuroticism equals being emotionally stable, fearless and shameless.

Please note that when we refer to each of these personality traits, we are also including their opposite – we are using a scale. For example, a person extremely low on extroversion will be high in its opposite – introversion.

How do these personality traits affect outcomes in life – winning or losing?

People who test high in conscientiousness score higher grades in school and college, commit fewer crimes, stay married longer and even live longer; they smoke and drink less; have fewer strokes, lower blood pressure, and a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease.

Conscientious people plan and set goals and when they can’t achieve one, they avoid stress and discouragement by setting a new attainable goal! They even plan to deal with setbacks or failure.

People who test low in conscientiousness engage in risk taking behaviors such as smoking.

People who test low in agreeableness are linked to high sympathetic nervous system activation, which in turn may lead to coronary artery disease.

People who test high in extroversion have greater social support which leads to greater mental and emotional health.

People who test high in neuroticism and low conscientiousness are each associated with earlier mortality.

People who test high in neuroticism smoke, smoke more and have a harder time trying to quit; they self-medicate negative emotions with alcohol, tend to abuse or become dependent on alcohol.  Read more

Solutions and strategies to success

Focus on your strengths and improve your weaknesses. Personality is malleable – but only in small increments. Take small steps to create new habits; reprogram your mind. An introverted person will never become a full-blown extrovert. However, with small increments of stepping out of the comfort zone, an introvert can become more social and sociable. A person who is high in neuroticism can take action to decrease and limit unhealthy behaviors, and, get help to lower neuroticism and increase confidence. I have many clients who have made huge turn-arounds in behavior and personality and are very proud and satisfied with their new lives and desired outcomes.

Life is full of choices. Make your choices conscious, healthy choices!
