Now, let’s talk about the teachings by Lou Holtz including 3 questions which will help you identify the quality of your relationships.

Lou Holtz spent 33 years as a college football head coach, winning 249 games – 100 of those at Notre Dame where he also won a national championship. As the only coach in college football history to lead six different teams to a bowl game, and someone who became famous for turning around losing teams, Holtz was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008.

Muhammad Ali had a powerful approach to success: “I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.’

Holtz adopted the same strategy: he made practice so hard that the games would be easy for his players. His successful coaching style wasn’t built on techniques for playing football games; it was built on developing character and realizing potential. He focused on serving and inspiring his players: “Your obligation is not to be well-liked, not to be popular. Your obligation is to make them the very best they can possibly be.”

Here are 10 life lessons I extracted from Lou Holtz’s teachings. The headings in bold are my summaries.

10. You are not a victim; you create your life and destiny
“Life’s a matter of making choices wherever you are, good or bad, it’s because of choices you made. Don’t blame anybody else. Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.”

9 .Choose excellence over perfection
“I was taught personal responsibility for choices you make. When we talk about a commitment to excellence, that’s a choice you make.”

8. There is no such thing as neutral; you are moving towards your goals or away from it; be willing to be uncomfortable to grow
“See there’s a rule of life that says you’re either growing or you’re dying. The tree’s either growing or it’s dying. So’s grass. So’s a marriage. So’s a business. So’s a person.”

7. You have to constantly set new goals
“You have to have something to hope for, something to dream. And even though you’ve done great things so far, what’s going to happen now?”

6. You need purpose, love, meaning and hope
“Life doesn’t have to be complicated…If you don’t have any of these four things in your life, you’re going to have a tremendous void. See, everybody needs something to do. Number two, everybody needs someone to love. Number three, everybody needs someone to believe in…But the fourth thing you need in your life, is you need something to hope for.”

5. Do the right thing, and forgive and learn from your mistakes
“There’s never a right time to do the wrong thing. And there’s never a wrong time to do the right thing. Just do what’s right.”

4. Look for the good, express gratitude and accept that there will be pain and loss
“Enjoy life. Have fun. You’re going to have problems, you’re going to have difficulties. That’s part of life.”

3. Time is limited – do the best you can
“Do everything to the best of your ability with time allotted.”

2. Be responsible – others are depending on you
“If you want to fail, you have the right to fail. You do not have the right to cause other people to fail, because you don’t do everything to the best of your ability. When you join a spouse, you bring a child into the world, you join a business, you join a team, you have obligations and responsibilities, and you owe it to other people to the maximum you can at each and every thing you do.”

1. Let go of your ego, show heart, and serve other people
“And the last rule, is show people you care. When you walk into a room, is your attitude “Hey, here I am, look at me”? It’s like, no. Your attitude, there you are, how can I help you? Trust, commitment, love.”

Three Key Questions
Consider the important people in your life (boss, partner, best friend) and answer these three questions: Can you trust them? Are they committed to you? Do they care about you?

If it is someone you love, care and respect, then the answer will be yes to all three questions. If you answer no to any of these three questions, then you know that this is a problematic relationship which demands a change.
