In this week’s Success Newsletter, I would like to reveal a simple yet powerful choice for the New Year.

Now, let’s talk about a simple yet powerful choice for the New Year.

At the beginning of every New Year, we make resolutions or set goals, many of which we never complete.

Here are the top 10 resolutions people make every year; and I am sure you know which  is the number 1 resolution!

As you stop to ponder the goals you want to set for this year, consider the most important choice you will make – to live for yourself, to live your passion.

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” – Steve Jobs

Live for yourself
This is a recurring theme in my work & teachings: Live your passion and beware of living for other people i.e. do what you love not what other people would love for you to do.

This principle applies to the big choices in life – career, family, etc. and to the small choices made on a daily basis.

Decide that you will make decisions for you and not the other way around.

Decide what is truly important to you – your values – and then decide to live according to your values on a daily basis!

For example, while working with a client, he was able to determine that his primary value was health, and yet he was plagued by frustration and unhappiness in spite of his career success. Why? He had career success but wasn’t living according to his values! Solution: he made the new conscious choice to make the necessary changes to live in alignment with his primary value of health each day.

“Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith….You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking. Don’t settle.”  Steve Jobs, Stanford University Speech, 2005 

Steve Jobs stated that doing great work was more important to him than being the richest man in the world. In other words, one of his primary values was pride in doing great work. And it is true that when you are living your passion, you will naturally do great work. Productivity, satisfaction and fulfillment are all directly related to living your passion.

Are you living your passion?
Finally, at the beginning of each New Year, we feel confident and empowered because we believe we have a lot of time. Although that is true in terms of the calendar year, it is not true in terms of our life: life is short and time is always running out.

For me, time is the most precious thing in life.

Why?

No matter what your value is, you cannot live it fully unless you have time – time to love, time to enjoy or create a family, time to travel, time to become successful in your career, time to be healthy, and so forth.

There is only one life and you make the choices – choose wisely – live from your heart with passion and enjoy every moment.
