Willow Smith is the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. Willow Smith is only 12 years old, but she’s already singing about falling in love, going on dates and having sex!
Did the preteen go too far with her latest song and video ‘Summer Fling?’
Human Behavior Expert, Patrick Wanis PhD responds:
She is singing about having sex and this is totally inappropriate and not in line with the developmental physical. Mental or emotional stages of a twelve year old girl who is barely an adolescent; the video reveals that her body has not yet developed – she is still a little girl – not a teenager. Around this age 12/13 a girl’s breasts and hips begin to develop along with the onset of menstruation. At this stage of development, girls feel awkward about their body and don’t boast about doing “it.”
She is not mature enough mentally or emotionally to be boasting that she and her ‘fling’ are walking “the beach at midnight.”
“We fight less and love hard
We walk the beach at midnight
We do it anyway”
Obviously the song was written for her – “We fight less and love hard” are words used by mature adult relationships not early adolescent infatuations. Her parents are being irresponsible and verging on negligent by not failing to fulfill their role as parents – to guide their daughter and set boundaries and limits for her. While children might rebel, they actually need boundaries, discipline, guidance and wisdom. And the Smiths are obviously not doing that. Which responsible and caring parents would let their daughter walk the beach alone with a male at midnight?
