TOP 10 CELEBRITY MELTDOWNS OF 2013 (seventh annual list)
By Patrick Wanis PhD
Sometimes we wonder ‘Are these people really that stupid?’ No. We made them Gods and gave them significance, power and influence which they don’t deserve and cannot skillfully handle.
Robin Thicke’s hit “Blurred Lines” sums up the decline of behavior in society as the lines and boundaries of right and wrong, good and bad are not only blurring and shrinking, but are actually disappearing. And above all in 2013, it is celebrities that are blurring the lines of decency, respect and morality.
In 2013, celebrity behavior has become almost completely synonymous with bad behavior, reinforcing the belief that celebrities though having the opportunity to become great role models, should not at all be considered as role models.
Entitlement and narcissism amongst celebrities has become so extreme and rampant that it is obvious that celebrities don’t even care about the impact and effect they are having on society and its impressionable youth and fans:
Blatantly promoting the use of drugs in songs, beating up photographers, trampling on the US flag, defecating in your pants while drunk, publicly threatening your ex-wife, comparing yourself to Jesus and military heroes, proudly stating you would cheat again – even after having been stripped of all of your wins, being a racist grandmother who justifies it by challenging anyone who has never said something they regret – to throw a rock at her and kill her; these are just a few examples of the way the lines of decency and morality are blurring to the point of disappearing.
Here is the list of the TOP CELEBRRITY MELTDOWNS OF 2013
10. Lindsay Lohan
Lohan’s erratic and bizarre behavior has landed her on the list of top 10 celebrity meltdowns 6 out of 7 years. Her behavior has somewhat improved in 2013, only because she hasn’t been in as much legal trouble as in the past 7 years.
In 2013, amongst a long list of stupid and controversial behavior, she was accused of taking jewelry and other things from the set of Anger Management, and she also hid under a table at a nightclub in Brazil; she has become a caricature. And after spending 90 days in rehab, she now plans to write a tell-all book about her life; she is cashing in on her dysfunction but still hasn’t found any meaning or purpose to her life.
9. “Teen Mom” star Farrah Abraham
–She’s a terrible role model to her young daughter; Abraham made a sex tape for sale and justified it by saying she wanted to celebrate her awesome body. She was pulled over for drunk driving after almost slamming into a police car; she blew a .147 on the breathalyzer, nearly twice Nebraska’s legal limit. Abraham went to rehab to deal with her problem with alcohol but it doesn’t seem that she fully understands the extent of her problems – lack of morality and terrible guidance for her young daughter.
8. Charlie Sheen
The Anger Management star stood out for his violent language and threats of violence: He urged fans to send rotten eggs and dog poop to his daughter’s school; he made threats against his ex-wife Brooke Mueller “I will exercise every resource at my disposal. I will, I will, I will, I will empty my entire war chest and if I can’t get it done, I know a guy who can.”; he even sent her a photo of a birthday cake with a grenade on top of it. Charlie Sheen lives in the delusion that the world is standing by waiting to serve him and his every whim and desire. Possibly the most bizarre thing he said all year was to offer to mentor Lindsay Lohan!
7. Lil Wayne
The rapper tramples on the American flag as part of a new music video shoot. Although he says he didn’t do it on purpose, he sings “the stars on the flag are never shining.” Wayne also end ups in hospital with seizures following a binge of Purple Drank – a cough syrup-laced drink.
6. Michael Douglas
Michael Douglas revealed to the world that he had throat cancer but the truth is that he actually had tongue cancer; Douglas said he lied because surgery for tongue cancer can be quite disfiguring, and he was promoting “Wall Street 2” at the time. The worst part is that Douglas was trying to promote that he is sexually active and has been for years when he lied and said his throat cancer was a result of an HPV strain caused by oral sex. Was he implying that he got it from his wife? Lying only causes people to respect you less and trust you less.
5. Alec Baldwin & Phil Robertson
Alex Baldwin doesn’t like to be told what to do i.e. turning off electronics while on board a flight about to take off. He also doesn’t like his photo being taken – unless he wants to promote a movie, TV show or his own TV show; he has had numerous run-ins with Paparazzi – he slammed one of them onto a car and yelled “I’ll f**king beat the f**k out of you…”, but following one incident where he made a homophobic slur against a NY Post photographer, and for his alleged abuse of colleagues at NBC’s headquarters, MSNBC cancelled his TV show “Up late with Alec Baldwin.” His behavior is simply an example of an inability to control his anger coupled with a grandiose sense of entitlement.
Duck Dynasty reality TV show star and family patriarch, Phil Robertson created one of the biggest controversies of 2013 with his response to a reporter from GQ magazine about sin. Robertson who is outspoken about his Christian faith, put homosexuality and bestiality in the same list of sins: “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men…Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”
A & E Networks which broadcasts the TV reality show suspended him because of his comments which they claim linked homosexuality with bestiality. However, A & E should not have been surprised by his comments given that they hired him and his family because of their truly larger than life personalities as well as their proud and bold beliefs around Christianity. The controversy erupted because Christian groups saw the suspension of Robertson as an attack on Christianity and an appeasement to the Gay advocacy groups which demanded Phil Robertson’s firing.
Note though, that there is a huge difference between the anti-gay comments by Phil Robertson and those of Alec Baldwin: Robertson stated his Christian beliefs and cited Biblical scriptures – he also said he did not judge people and that they could make their own choices; Alec Baldwin, on the other hand, was beating up a photographer and used an anti-gay word as an insult. Also, Alec Baldwin was hired by MSNBC as a news talk show host and therefore expected of him impartiality, acceptance, tolerance and not violence or insults; Robertson was hired for his outrageous and bold personality and beliefs. Robertson’s mistake was placing homosexuality and bestiality and terrorists in the same list.
Robertson also denied racism in his State of Louisiana, stating that he never witnessed it and said he never saw the black man singing the blues. The media did not care about these comments and only attached itself to the sensationalism and divisiveness of the comments about sex and homosexuality.
4. Kanye West
The rap singer who has compared himself to Jesus, and calls his album and tour Yeezus, married a woman famous for a sex tape – Kim Kardashian which, in turn caused his career to decline. But worse, he compared himself to police and military heroes claiming that he puts his own life on the line when he is touring. Worse than being delusional, he has a martyr complex and an inferiority complex which drives him to extreme over compensation. Brimfield Police Chief David Oliver challenged Kanye drop his singing career and join the military.
3. Miley Cyrus
Her twerking performance on MTVs VMAs got Miley Cyrus the attention and strong criticism of millions of fans and parents but also other celebrities: Cher slammed Miley and Sinead O Connor told her to put her clothes on and stop being pimped or pimping herself. Twerking is not new but Miley’s performance revealed that she now seems to place all of her value in her sex and sexuality and not her actual musical talent. She seemed extremely out of place when performing and made her audience even more uncomfortable since it is obvious that she is not sufficiently emotionally developed to convince the audience that she is a woman who exudes, understands or commands sensuality, sexuality or eroticism. There were strong undertones that her performance was driven by a need to rebel against her dad and her Baptist upbringing.
Possibly more damaging than her twerking was the various references and ways she promoted ecstasy and drug use in her songs – exemplifying callous and irresponsible action towards her young, impressionable fans, and, ultimately rebelling against her father and Baptist upbringing.
2. Lance Armstrong
After finally admitting to doping and lying, and being stripped of his 7 Tour de France titles, Armstrong again played the victim saying they singled him out because he was an A-hole, and worse, he said he would cheat again – dope again. No. Lance was not singled out; the consequences were well deserved – he relentlessly lied for years about cheating, finally got caught but continued to lie against undeniable truth and like a predator, he destroyed the lives of the people who told the truth about him
1. Paula Deen
Paula Deen was fired from the Food Network and lost many sponsorship deals when it was revealed that while she was planning her brother’s 2007 wedding, she said of the waitstaff, “Well what I would really like is a bunch of little [N-words] to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties…now that would be a true Southern wedding, wouldn’t it?”
Paula Deen broke down in tears on national television but still played the victim when she said that if anyone in the audience had never said something they wished they could take back, “please pick up that stone and throw it as hard at my head so it kills me. I want to meet you.”
Her failing was not so much the words and racism she demonstrated but rather that she tried to avoid full responsibility for them.
Other celebrities that almost made the Top 10 List
Kardashians – it was a terrible year for the Kardashians – Khloe is divorcing Lamar Odom (the reality show went on to spoils Lamar’s career); Kris and Bruce Jenner separated and Kanye’s career is fizzling after he got engaged to Kim and tried to make her a rock star in a music video which is being parodied by the likes of James Franco and Seth Rogen. Kim also was criticized after it was revealed that her EBay auction, which claimed proceeds were going to help victims of the Philippines typhoon, was actually only giving 10% of the proceeds. When the priorities are narcissism, greed and self-aggrandizement without care for others, then the result is simply self-destruction.
Justin Bieber – His teenage behavior is understandable – he cannot control his temper but some of his behavior is bizarre and wreaks of typical narcissism and a young lost boy who cannot deal with the stardom and adulation; he took with him to Germany a pet monkey (but without any medical papers – it was permanently confiscated); his own bodyguard had to hold him back when he lost his temper and was cussing and threatening a photographer in London; a neighbor claimed he spat on him during an altercation. As expected a young celebrity without proper guidance or a mentor can easily lose himself and his values but for Justin Bieber, his antics have caused him to become a caricature. And a la Lindsay Lohan, he is becoming more famous for his bizarre behavior than his musical talent.
Chris Brown – 2013 saw various incidents of Chris Brown’s anger and rage which also resulted in two violent incidents as well failing to properly complete his community-service hour records; On Aug. 16, a judge assigned Chris 1,000 more hours of community service, stating that he previously submitted a false report. Chris also went to rehab to deal with his anger; he won’t be free of his anger until he forgives his father, forgives himself for not being able to properly protect his mother from his abusive father (children of abusive fathers often subconsciously blame themselves for not being able to protect the mother and stop the father from abusing the mother), and until he finds a mature mentor to guide and direct him.
Ke$ha – the singer drinks her own urine on an episode of her reality TV show on MTV. While riding in car, Ke$ha’s friend tells that her mother knows someone who drinks her urine every day. And so, Ke$ha begins to pee into a water bottle and then drinks it.
Joan Rivers – her parents were Russian Jewish immigrants but that heritage doesn’t grant her a license nor does it make it acceptable or less offensive to make disgusting comments and jokes about Holocaust victims. She critiqued a dress worn by German supermodel Heidi Klum, saying, “The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens.”
Jason London – The “Dazed and Confused” actor got drunk at a bar, fought with the bouncer, and while being treated for injuries yelled homophobic slurs at police and paramedics and then defecated in his own pants. Alcohol and drugs destroy your values as well as one’s self-control.
Cee Lo Green – one of the judges on NBCs “The Voice” is charged with one felony count of furnishing a controlled substance and could face up to four years in prison if convicted. He is accused of slipping ecstasy to a woman while dining with her. Obviously, any pop star can score a girl without drugging her; so if the charges are true, then the real issue is about control, power and manipulation of a woman.
