How to Get What You Want

In this Success Newsletter, I would like to share with you part of the process to get what you want.

The first step is to know what you want. You cannot hit a target if you don’t have one! Here is an excerpt from my audio book, Get what you want!

“Here is a simple exercise I give to clients that will help to identify what you want and to confirm that what you say you want is your deep desire and passion. I always encourage people to live out of purpose and passion -not fear and obligation.

Take a few moments to relax. You might dim the lights in the room and take in a few slow long deep breaths. When completing the answers below, ensure that you write the first thing that comes to your mind without thinking about or analyzing the answers.  Allow sixty seconds for each answer to questions one to three.

  1. If you had a million dollars, what would you do and how would you spend it?
  2. If you could do anything without the fear of failing, guaranteed to succeed, what would you do?
  3. If you only had six months to live, what would you do?
  4. Imagine it is near the end of your life. You are sitting down on a porch looking out and thinking back on your life. Now, you have passed on. One of your friends or acquaintances has been chosen to read your eulogy. Write down the name of the person who will read your eulogy and then write out your eulogy as if he or she were writing it and then delivering it. Take two minutes to complete this exercise and again write down the first things that come to mind.

When I did the above eulogy exercise, I was completely shocked by what I had written and what it revealed about me. The person that I chose to read my eulogy was a friend who was angry with me at the time because I spoilt her Christmas and she wasn’t speaking with me. In my eulogy, there was a lot of anger and self-loathing for the way I had thus far spent my life: “Patrick Wanis was a f… d… He had so much talent and wasted his life. He could have been so much more, but the stupid p… wasted it. He got scared, so he took less chances, and now the f… lies here dead; dead of love, dead of life. He isolated himself, refused to allow anyone to get close or know him. So now the f.. is dead. Let’s bow our heads and pray that he doesn’t come back…. Goodbye Patrick Wanis – you p… me off! Let’s burn him now!” And this is edited, condensed version!

My eulogy was a wake up call. At a subconscious level, I was so angry with myself. I hated myself. I felt that I was wasting my life and talents. I was going down the wrong path and could see now that if I continued on this path, I would end up very unhappy. I also saw and grasped now that what I truly wanted was to take more chances, to love and to connect with other people. What had held me back thus far? Fear. This is what holds us all back. When we can conquer fear, we can have whatever we want. Later in this book, I teach you how to conquer fear.

Passion To get what you want will require devotion, dedication and commitment to the practice of the technique I am about to share with you. Therefore, the single factor that will determine your commitment is your passion. In other words, the answer to why you want something is more important than the answer to how you will get it. Spend a moment now writing out all the reasons why you want your goals and intentions. As you read them aloud, feel if there is passion in what you have written, in your voice and heart. Do you get excited when you think and imagine your goal or outcome? If you answered yes, excellent. You shall have it. If you answered no, create new goals and intentions that give you passion, burning desire and energy.”
